Students will explore topics covered Prep A and RCM 4 with the Royal Conservatory of Music.

Start Date: Tuesday, September 3rd 2019

Time: 4pm-5pm (1 hour group class)

Each week students will take part in an activity based theory class, where classmates can be working at different levels and grades. The teacher will facilitate growth and progress through weekly assignments and fun theory games completed as a class. Students can begin from Prep A music theory up to Theory Level 4. 

Students are expected to complete their assignments on a weekly basis to keep up with class concepts. Students will also work to complete Theory Monster Book 1, 2 and 3.

Prep A/Prep B New Concepts

  • Keys of C major and A minor
  • Pitch and Notation
  • Rhythm and Meter
  • Intervals
  • Scales
  • Chords
  • Musical Terms and Signs

Level 1: New Concepts

  • Keys G major and F Major
  • Notes up to and including two ledger lines
  • New time signatures and dotted half notes
  • Intervals both melodic and harmonic
  • Tonic triads in solid or blocked form

Level 2: New Concepts

  • Keys E minor, D minor
  • Stems and beams, ledger lines 3 above and below staff
  • Intervals up to an including an octave
  • Scale degree names including tonic, dominant, and leading note
  • Chords using functional chord symbols
  • Melody and composition
  • Analysis 

Level 3: New Concepts

  • New major and minor keys up to two flats or sharps
  • Enharmonic equivalents, using sharps, flats, and natural signs
  • Transposition up or down one octave within the treble or bass clef
  • Sixteen notes and rests, upbeat (anacrusis)
  • Application of time signatures 

Level 4: New Concepts

  • Major and minor keys up to three sharps and flats
  • Transposition up or down one octave including change of clef
  • Triplets
  • Scales natural, harmonic and melodic
  • Chords using root/quality chord symbols
  • Melody and Composition

Materials are not included in the course fee. Students will be required to purchase the corresponding theory book and practice exams to complete this course.
